Lynda.com decided to do the Drupal series based on user demand - which augurs well for the success of this series.:) We talked about doing further Drupal series: If this one does well, I think they're likely. (Of course, don't quote me on that! I'm not an official representative of the company, etc.) I'd certainly like to do a 'Beyond the Basics' series for them, to include parts we just didn't have time for in this one. (Notably, we originally planned to include a section on Views in the first series, but realized it's a subject that deserves much more than one seven-minute video.) And since Lynda.com's audience is primarily graphic arts professionals, a Theming series also seems like a good candidate. But we'll see how this one does.

I don't have the figures, but I can't imagine that there are many professional graphics professionals out there on LAMP. Plus, I'm not familiar with any LAMP packages that rival the MAMP or WAMP ones in simplicity.

I was quite excited about your series. So I signed up for a month at lynda.com only to discover that the videos don't work on Vista!!!! Believe me, I'm getting way too used to things not working on Vista but it has been around for a while now and I do have Quicktime installed and working. Now that I've looked at lynda.com's system requirements they only mention XP and 2000 under Windows. To be honest that's pretty poor on lynda.com's part. I can't really say much more than that. I'm sitting here with a Core 2 Quad processor @ 2.8 GHz, 4 Gbytes of memory on a laptop in a hotel room with high speed internet access and all the necessary software installed and I can't even download and watch media that I've paid for that's in a format that's been around for a decade and a half on an OS that's been around for over a year and a half.
It's just super-disappointing to me. I've been aware of lynda.com for years but never used the service, now I just don't like 'em!!!

I did a quick Google search and found 'no' indication of anyone talking about lack of Vista support on Lynda.com (if there were, then doubtless 'someone' would be talking about it - but nothing). Lynda.com even has video lessons ABOUT Windows Vista - I'm sure their videos work on Vista, or those people creating the Vista-related videos would surely have, eh, noticed;) Regarding Quicktime, ensure that you have Quicktime 7 or higher installed: If Quicktime isn't working out on your particular computer, worst case why not look into using VLC player, or Quicktime Alternative? You mention the 'minimum' system requirements not referring to Vista.

Thot, I'd bitch about it here for a while first. I have QT 7.5 installed and can play.mov files in the quicktime player from my HD. It's just the embedded video files from lynda.com I can't play. I see no option to download the moves to play in another app. Perhaps I am experiencing particular probs due to Vista x64 but nonetheless lynda.com is not an awesome service in my experience in the absence of an alternative mode/means of access to the media I've paid for access to, IM-ever-less-than-HO!.

No, you cannot download the files - they are streaming only, as it is a monthly subscription service, not download-and-keep. You 'might' be able to load the URLs of the videos directly into another Quicktime-capable program instead of your web browser (e.g.

Well, I didn't contact tech support yet but I did go back to lynda.com to try again and got the videos working. I'm powering 2 external 1680x1050 DVI LCD monitors from this laptop. One via the built in DVI out and one via a USB to DVI converter.
When I select a chapter of the video from IE / Firefox when the browser is displayed on one of the external monitors the videos plays. If I select a video when the browser is displayed on the laptop's screen then I just get a black screen and the audio. If I move the video screen to one of the externals the video plays. If I move it bac k to the laptop screen the video freezes at that frame while the audio still plays. So yup, it's more than likely a Vista x64 problem. I still think it's lame that lynda.com doesn't have alternatives. or to post comments.

I subscribed to them for more than a year. As I couldn't afford the premium annual subscription ($375, I think), I requested them at least a couple of times for introducing a monthly pricing plan where they would provide access to the exercise files - it's pretty much useless merely watching training videos if you can't practice with the exercise files.
They replied saying they were looking into it. After more than a year without any option for such a plan, I discontinued. I really don't know why it would be so difficult to introduce a monthly option for the premium version - I would gladly pay $35 or so. I am sure I am not the only one requesting this.
